For a residential driveway in a freeze-thaw climate, asphalt is the cost-effective default. In the sun belt, or where the surface will still be there in forty years, concrete's case strengthens considerably.

The comparison is sensitive to assumptions — a concrete drive that reaches 40 years without replacement changes the picture substantially. But under most realistic assumptions asphalt carries the lower lifecycle cost as well as the lower initial cost, provided the maintenance actually happens. Neglected asphalt fails much faster than neglected concrete.

Repair and resurfacing
This is asphalt's decisive advantage and it is underweighted in most comparisons.
- Asphalt patches blend. A hot-mix patch is the same material as the surrounding pavement and weathers to match within a season.
- Asphalt can be resurfaced. A 1.5–2 inch overlay at 15 years costs about a third of replacement and resets the clock on the surface.
- Asphalt can be recycled in place. Full-depth reclamation pulverises the existing pavement and base into a new stabilised base without hauling anything away.
- Concrete patches are permanent scars. Colour and texture never match, and a patch introduces new joints that become the next failure point.
- Concrete resurfacing is limited. Overlays exist but are specialised; most failed concrete is broken out and replaced.

Which lasts longer, asphalt or concrete?

Can you put asphalt over concrete?
Yes, and it is common. The concrete must be structurally sound; joints and cracks should be treated to reduce reflective cracking, and a minimum 2 inch overlay with a tack coat is normal. Reflective cracking over the joints is likely eventually.
