- Sixteen mix densities rather than a hard-coded 145 lb/ft³ — the difference between assuming dense hot mix and correctly selecting porous asphalt is 31% of your order.

Which calculator should I use?
If you know the area and depth of the surface you are paving and you want a single figure to order against, start with the tonnage calculator — it is the general-purpose tool and every other calculator is a focused version of it. When your project has a shape, use the dedicated page: the driveway calculator ships with common residential presets, and the parking lot calculator handles the two-lift surface-plus-binder structure that commercial lots need. If you are recycling, the millings calculator defaults to the lower RAP density (125 lb/ft³) instead of 145, so it will not overstate your tonnage the way a generic tool does.
The rest of the set exists because people search for a specific output rather than a shape. The weight, volume and coverage calculators each foreground one number — pounds and tonnes, cubic yards and cubic metres, or square feet covered per ton — while square yards to tons mirrors how US DOT bid items are written. The density and compaction calculators are for checking the physics itself: converting between density units, or turning a loose lift thickness into its compacted depth. Any of them will give you the same tonnage for the same inputs; they simply put a different answer at the top.
How accurate are the results?
For ordering material, these calculators are as accurate as the two numbers you cannot know perfectly: density and compaction. We use industry-standard densities — 145 lb/ft³ for dense-graded hot mix, with fifteen other mix presets for anything non-standard — but your supplier's actual mix design might differ by a few percent, and a mix placed on an uneven subgrade compacts to a slightly different thickness than the design depth. That is why every calculator includes a waste buffer, defaulted to 10%, which absorbs both effects plus the material lost to trimming, joints and truck cleanout. For a routine driveway or lot, the tonnage you get after the buffer is what you should order. For a bid or a structural pavement, treat the figure as a strong starting estimate and confirm against your supplier's mix design and, where loads are heavy, an engineer's pavement design.
A common source of error has nothing to do with the tool: entering thickness in inches while thinking in feet, or vice versa. The calculators convert units for you, but they cannot know that you meant 3 inches when you typed 3 feet, which would overstate an order thirty-six-fold. If a result looks surprising, check the depth field first — it is almost always the culprit.
Imperial and metric, and every currency
Every calculator runs in both unit systems and switches the whole form at once, so metric users enter metres and centimetres and read back tonnes, cubic metres and square metres per tonne, while imperial users work in feet, inches, short tons and cubic yards. Cost is calculated in whichever of nine currencies you choose, with a regional default — dollars on the main site, euros on the French pages, pounds on the UK pages, and rupees on the Indian and Pakistani versions — so the estimate reads the way a local contractor would write it. None of this changes the underlying tonnage, which is a physical quantity; it only changes how the answer is presented.
