What hot mix asphalt is
HMA is roughly 94–95% aggregate and 4.5–6% bitumen binder by weight, combined at a central plant at 275–350 °F. The heat is what makes it work: at that temperature the binder has a low enough viscosity to coat every aggregate particle, and the mix is workable enough to be spread by a paver and compacted by a roller. As it cools it stiffens into a flexible, waterproof, load-spreading layer.
Everything about hot mix logistics follows from that temperature requirement. It cannot be stockpiled. It has to be hauled in insulated or tarped bodies. It has to be placed and rolled within a window measured in tens of minutes. And it cannot be laid in cold or wet weather.

The number is the nominal maximum aggregate size, and it controls the minimum and maximum lift thickness — no lift should be less than about twice or more than about three times that dimension.

The practical consequence: the roller operator is racing the weather. On a cold, windy day a thin lift can pass through the entire compaction window in under fifteen minutes.

Reading a mix designation
A typical US specification reads something like Superpave 12.5 mm, PG 64-22, 20%
RAP, 3 million ESAL. Each element tells you something:
- Superpave 12.5 mm — the design system and the nominal maximum aggregate size, which sets your lift thickness range.
- PG 64-22 — performance grade binder rated for pavement temperatures from 64 °C down to −22 °C. Higher first number for hot climates, lower second number for cold ones.
- 20% RAP — recycled content, which usually implies a slightly softer virgin binder.
- 3 million ESAL — the design traffic level, which drives the gyratory compaction effort in the mix design.
For ordering, the only parts you need are the mix name and the quantity. For estimating tonnage, the aggregate size matters because it caps your lift thickness.

How long does hot mix asphalt take to cure?
It does not cure chemically — it cools. Cars can use it within 24–48 hours. Full hardening of the binder continues for 6–12 months, which is why the first seal coat should wait at least six months.
What is the minimum temperature to lay hot mix?
Most specifications require an air and surface temperature above 40–50 °F and rising, with tighter limits for thin lifts. Below that the mat cools before compaction is complete and density targets cannot be met.
How far can hot mix be hauled?
Typically up to about an hour. Beyond that the mix arrives too cool unless it is insulated or tarped and the ambient temperature is high. This is why asphalt price varies so strongly with distance from the plant.
